[Class 120 (ii)] A machine for winding soft rolls or cheeses in which the carriage or cradle carrying the roll or cheese is balanced or substantially balanced throughout the winding of the roll to hold the roll in driving contact with a driving roller, has the cradle provided with frictional drag means for damping vibrations of the cradle and applying a constant frictional drag throughout the winding operation against angular movement of the cradle with means for adjusting the drag means to vary the drag or resistance to such angular movement. As shown, the cradle 12, carrying the roll 6 driven by a drum 7, is pivoted by a boss 16 on the arms 18 of a bracket 19 and carries a pivoted arm 21 having a curved frictional surface 21a engaging a surface 18a on one of the arms of the bracket 19 ; a spring 38 disposed between a head on a rod 37 and a stud 35 pivoted in the arm 21 imposes the drag between the surfaces 18a, 21a, the rod passing freely through a hole in the stud 35 and being adjustably screwed into a second stud 33 pivoted on the bracket 19. The weight 32, pressing the roll against the drum 7, is adjustably mounted in a slot 30 in the arm 28 depending from the cradle, the arm being angularly adjustable relatively to the arms of the cradle. In a modification the drag means comprises a spring mounted on the rod forming the pivotal support for the cradle, a screw-threaded, axially adjustable nut being provided to adjust the compression of the spring which causes an axial thrust between the cradle and a fixed part.
