[Class 120 (ii)] Tensioning apparatus for a yarn or like winding machine comprises a tension device, means for applying pressure thereto, a control member movable by and with the growth in diameter of the package and control mechanism arranged to transmit motion of the control member to the pressure-applying means to vary the degree of pressure applied to the tension device such mechanism comprising a member mounted on the control member and a longitudinal element that is movable substantially only in the direction of its length and has one end co-operating with the cam and the other end operatively connected to the pressure applying means so that it actuates the latter in accordance with the movement of the cam member. As shown the tension device comprise a pair of saucer-shaped discs 13, 14 which are pressed against the yarn &c. s by spring spiders or resilient discs 24, bearing against the rims of the discs 13, 14 which with the spiders or discs 24 are mounted on a spindle 15; a collar 26 fixed to the spindle bears against the outer spider or disc 24 and the inner one is engaged by the end of a sleeve 16 screwing into a boss 18 on the fixed bracket 19, a spring 28 disposed between the head 17 of the sleeve and a collar 29 on the spindle pressing the discs 13, 14 together and adjustment of the sleeve in the boss 18 varying the initial pressure between the discs and so the initial tension on the yarn s. The tension during winding is controlled by the swinging frame 8 which carries the traversing yarn guide a cam plate on the frame engaging one end of a wire 33 disposed in a tubular guide 34 and having its other end fixed in a plunger 60 slidably mounted in a bracket 53 on the bracket 19 with its end engaging the end of the spindle 15. The camplate 32 is pivoted in lugs 36 on the swinging frame and has one end engaged by the grooved end of a screw 42 adjustable in the frame 8 so that the inclination of the cam plate may be adjusted to vary the manner in which the drag applied to the yarn is varied during winding so that the tension thereof at the point of winding is maintained substantially constant or reduced somewhat throughout the winding. The cam plate 32 may be flat to transmit a straight line motion to the tension device or it may be curved.
