This invention relates to a tension regulating device for use where threads are to be fed or drawn oil at substantially constant tension or at diiferent tensions, for instance, as in winding,
twisting and doubling operations.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved tension regulating device which is simple and durable in construction, eflicient in operation and inexpensive in cost.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved tension regulating device for use on machines for winding, twisting and doubling threads which are drawn from a thread supply on a creel by means of a positively driven feed roller.
Other objects of this invention, together with certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will appear from the following detailed description and the appended claims.
The tension regulating device of the instant invention finds particularly useful application in thread doubling operations where the supply of thread is drawn from wound bobbins supported on the pegs of a creel or similar device.
The tension regulating device of the instant invention controls the tension on the thread as it is drawn from the supply bobbin on the creel. One or more tension regulating devices may be employed depending on the tension desired on the individual threads being doubled. In doubling two threads, particularly in the case where a different tension is desired on each thread, it is often found that only one tension regulating device is suflicient to give the result desired. The device of the instant invention, being adapted to be used with individual supply bobbins, can be employed in the doubling of any desired number of threads.
According to the instant invention, the tension 40 regulating device comprises two arms or levers, one of which carries an adjustable weight and the other is fitted with a. roller adapted to apply pressure to the surface of the thread on the revolving supply bobbin, the arrangement being such that any desired tension may be placed on the thread.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, particularly with reference to the drawing wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is shown. It is to be understood, however, 50 that this description is given by way of example only and is in no way limitative.

Like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
The doubling unit diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1 comprises a creel 4 having pe s 5 which are adapted to receive thread supply bobbins 6 and 1. I Threads 8 and 9 from bobbins 6 and '1, respectively, are led over guide rod ll, through the drop wires l2 of a stop motion device and then threaded through guide eye [3 onto a positively driven feed roller, generally indicated by the reference numeral M, which draws the thread ii and 9 from the supply bobbins. The threads are then led through guide eyes l5 and I6 onto a doubler bobbin II which is carried by a spindle .98 adapted to be rotated by a belt l9 as is well understood in the art.
The tension regulating device of this invention comprises a collar 22 having a bore of a size such that it is freely rotatable about a peg 5 of the creel. Attached to collar 22 is a lever 23 of any suitable configuration, which lever is adapted to receive for sliding movement thereon a weight 24. Also attached to said collar 22 is a second lever 25 which is bent at 26 so as not to interfere with the flange of the bobbin. At the free end of lever 25 is mounted a freely rotatable roller 21 adapted to contact the surface of the thread on the bobbin. The tension on the thread on the supply bobbin is adjusted by moving the weight 24 along the lever 23, the weight being held in adjusted position by means of set screw 28.
It is often necessary to prevent the tension regulating device from slipping forward on the creel peg. To this end there is provided an adaptor 2| which is a tubular member, preferably made of wood, having a bore of a size such that it makes a tight fit with the creel peg. Where required this adaptor is slipped on the creel peg after the tension regulating device has been placed thereon. There must, of course, be a little play between the collar 22 and the adaptor 21 so as not to hinder the free revolution of the collar on the creel peg.
In operation the tension regulating device, or devices where more than one are required, is mounted on the creel peg above the mounted wound bobbin which is to act as a supply package in the thread doubling operation. The roller 2'! is then placed in contact with the surface of the yarn on the bobbin and the desired tension is applied thereto by moving the weight 24 along the lever 28.
While the braking action of the tension regulating device is shown as acting on the surface of the yarn wound on the bobbin, it will be appreciated that the braking action may be applied to the flange of the bobbin instead.
It is to-be understood that the foregoing detailed description is merely given by way of illustration and that many variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device for drawing threads from wound 2. In a device for drawing threads from wound ing a collar rotatably mounted on a creel peg,
a plurality of levers carried by said collar, an idler mller carried at the free end 01' one of said levers, said idler roller being adapted to contact I the thread on .the wound bobbin, and a. weight carried on theother of said levers for applying pressure on the thread through the medium of said idler roller.
3. In a device for drawing threads from wound bobbins, the combination with a creel having pegs thereon, of a tension regulating device comprising a collar rotatably mounted on a creel peg, a plurality of levers carried by said collar, an idler roller carried at the free end of one of said levers, said idler roller being adapted to contact the thread on the wound bobbin, a weight carried on the other of said levers for applying pressure on the thread through the medium of said idler roller, and means for retaining the collar on said creel peg.
