INDIVIDUAL WARP TENSION DEVICE i A n vGeorge Holden, Philadelphia, Pa. o f Application June 21, 1941, seriai No. 399,031 y e l 5C1aims.n(C1.242-151) My invention relatesl to a new'and useful individual warp tension device and has forone'of its objects to generally'improve and simplify deyvices of this character for use in connection with looms of several types.
Another object of the invention is to provide a warptension device thatwillmaintain an even tension at all Vtimes thereby producing a more uniform product.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a warp tension device so constructed and arrangedfthat-the warpsr can be `tied on while the loom is vin operation, thus resulting vin a con- `siderable saving of ktime and an increase in pro'- l lduction.
voperating and attending to the looms.
l A further object of the invention is to provide a warp tension device that'v can be readily and easily replaced with lessy experienced help. A still further object of this invention is to Y provide the warp tension device withfanadjust'- able sectional leg which can be swung in and out for disposition in an outof tl'ievvay location and to a position of easy access,r and saidyleg functions as a counter-balance fiorvother parts. With the above and other objects inl view,
this invention consists of the details ,of lcon-v y struction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then designated by theclaims. In order that those skilled inthe art to which one side by the sliding closure plates I2 held in place by screws I3. y v f In the bearing recesses II are 'mounted the trunnions I4 of the axle I5 having a rearwardly projecting rigid leg section lI6 to which is pivoted the swinging leg section Il.` The outer free end of said leg section I1 is enlarged and has a chamber I8 in its top face providing a circular track I9 on which a turntable 20 or a spool '2| rests with the spindle 22, carried by the swinging leg section, as the axis.
Where the turntable is used, the spool ZIr rests thereon ,and the top surface of said turn-` spring 25 positioned in the chamber I8 with one 'thereby decreasingthe usual hazards to persons Ii O this invention appertains-may understandhow to make and use the same, Iwill describe an embodiment in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a partvr hereof, ,o
in which: o o
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of thewarp tension device showing it mountedv on Aa loom repre- -sented by one of the standardsV thereof.
Fig.f2 is a fragmentary sectionaliview to illustrate details of construction. f
Fig. 3 is a side elevation lof the box of the tension device illustrating the manner in which the tension is released.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of complete warp tension device. v
Fig. 5 is a. diagrammatic view of the several vrollers in perspective to illustratetheir 'relationv to one another,
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied I0 represents the standards of a loom having bearing recesses II which are closed at upper ends.
end anchored` to the swinging legsection and the other end fixed to the turntable.
A finger 26 also projects rearwardly from the axle I5v in the inward path'of travel of the swinging leg section IT andis frictionally engaged thereby to temporarily retain said swinging leg section in its folded position. The weight 'of the leg, including both of its sections, to some extent, counterbalances the box. and component parts to be described below, but to prevent un'- due oscillation of the tension device, the rigid leg section I6 has an elongated hole21 therein rthrough which a screw 28v is projected and.
screwed into; one ofthe standards I0.
The axle I5 also has a forwardly projecting `arm 29, on the outer lend of which isa bracket 30 carrying the box 3|. This box has a 'bottom 32, a front wall 33, aback wall 34 and sidewalls 35.rv The front andback walls eachr have a vertical slot 36 -of a size to accommodate the particular warp used on the loom equipped with the tension devices and these slots are open at* their In each of the side Walls `:i5-is an inverted Yv-shaped slot 3'I'and preferably the stem, which is openat the upper edge of its respective side wall, is wider than the branches. :'The ends of the axles 38 of the idler rollers 39 rest in the lower parts of the branches of the slots 31, being inserted through the stems of said slots. A tension roll `4f! iswprovided with journals 4I, which are slightly smaller` than kthe width of the stems of the slots 3'I and rest` therein, ,and also carry,
what I term, brake drums 42. The ,circumfer-l ence of the tension roll 40 is covered with a jacket 43 of textile or other suitable material to prevent slipping of the A pair of levers 44, preferably of the bellcrank type, are pivoted on the sides of the box 3|, one on each side and preferably spaced from the box a distance approximately equal to the width of the brake drums 42. The corresponding arms of the levers have cross bars 45 connected thereto so that the parts of the lever mechanism operate in unison.
Brake bands or drags 43 of flat spring steel embrace the brake drums 42 and one end of each band is anchored at the pivot point of its respective lever 44 and the other end of each of said bands is attached to one of the crossk bars e 45 through the medium of adjustment devices 5|.
These mayl include screweyes 52 mounted on the bar `45 and passing through connectors 53,
lent nut'5 threaded on eachl screw and bearing against the cross bar for regulatingthe tension of each spring 48; lTo thread the tension device the lever mechanism is'released, the brake bands slipped from the brake drums and the tension roll `and idler, rollers lifted out. The warp 24 isv then placed iin the slots 36 and theidler rollers replaced. Next, the warp between the idler rollers'is pulled 11D to form an open loop or sling andthe tension roll is inserted therein and said tension rollreplaced. Finally the brake bands are repositionedand the tension adjusted. f I
When the tension device is threaded and ready for use, the warp runs under the cross bar to which the brake bands areconnected and then upward as illustrated inFigs. y2 and 3 so that any pull -on the warp has a tendency to lift this lcross bar against the action of the springs 4B thereby releasing the brake bands, more or less,
from the brake drums to relieve the pressure of the tension roll on the warp in proportion to the pull on the warp. As a knot in the warp passes between the first idler roller and the tension roll, the latter will be moved to one side to permit the knot to pass and when such knot reaches the nextidler roller Vthe tension'roll `will be moved in the opposite direction to open a space-between said next idler roller and the tension roll `to permit the knot to pass them without binding.
The limited oscillating movements of the tensiony device as a whole, as controlled by the stop screw 28, will temporarily relieve any snapping pull or back lash von the warp resulting in a more even progressivetension on the warp even thoughknots or imperfections occur which night v cause a uttering action in the warp.
As the warp is withdrawn from the spool .the turntable 20 will be rotated a limited distance, or until the spring 25 becomes Wound up, then when the Warp is released from the tensiondevice said turntable will be rotatedfin the access thereto and then moved back to place so.
there Will not be too greata counter action on the box andL its `component parts and the leg with the spool .thereon will be out of the way of persons lpassing along'in back of ythe loom or between banks oflooms.
Of course I do not .wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, as these may be varied within the scope of the appended claims: without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as` new and useful is:
