928,464. Unwinding threads &c. GEOFFROY-DELORE S.A. Nov. 23, 1959 [Nov. 24, 1958], No. 39653/59. Addition to 850,970. Class 120 (2). [Also in Group XVI] An improvement in or modification of the braking mechanism disclosed in the parent Specification consists of mounting the braking mechanism on a support in operative relation to a reel journalled on the support and holding a roll of tape, wire or the like, the support being adapted to be detachably mounted on a spindle of a multiple winding machine with the reel coaxial with the spindle. As shown, a unit 50 includes a support 1 and reel holding a roll 2 of tape, the reel including a brake drum 3 engaged by a brake shoe 4. The shoe 4 is on an arm 5 of a bell crank-lever pivoted at 9, the other arm 6 being attached to a spring 7 adjustable by a screw 26. The lever 6 has an idler roller 8 around which tape 13 passes before passing around a second roller 10 and a pulley 16 on an arm 17 pivoted at 18 and attached to a counter weight 19. A pointer 20 indicates tension on a scale 21 such that the screw 26 can be adjusted to produce a required tension before fitting the roll 2 on the spindle of a winding machine. A roller 20 is driven by a motor 23 through a variable speed drive 24 to unwind tape 13.
