Abstract

780,164. Tension control means WARDRAY & CO.. Ltd. June 6. 1955 [March 5, 1954], No. 6521/54. Class 120(2) A tensioning device for wire &c. in coil winding machines comprises a reel or drum 15, a brake device 18 associated therewith and means responsive to the tension in the wire and operatively connected to the brake device 18 for controlling the rotation of the drum in accordance with the tension and is characterized in that the tension responsive means includes a pivoted member 20 having guide means 19 and connected to the brake device 18 by a resilient link 28, which consists of a pair of telescopically fitting, members, one member being connected to the pivoted member and one to the brake device having resilient means between them which acts normally to urge the members relatively one to the other in a direction to apply the brake device. The pivoted member may be urged by resilient means 24 to apply a predetermined tension to the wire &c. In operation wire is taken from the drum 15 and is led over the guide means 19 to a take-up, former 11. Any increase in tension is followed by a loosening of the brake and vice-versa. The resilient means between the telescopic members may consist of two springs one being weaker than the other to give a sensitive control of the tension and also allow immediate stoppage of the drum as the coil winding mechanism stops so that slack wire is prevented.
