Abstract

842,748. Yarn tension control means. GOODRICH CO., B.F. Oct. 10, 1957 [Oct. 10, 1956], No. 31703/57. Class 120(2). Tension controlling means comprises a rotatable spool support to receive a supply spool of flexible filamentary material, a pivoted arm carrying a guide member over which such material is fed as it is payed from the spool, the arm being arranged so that its weight imposes tension on such material and so that it is adapted to pivot in response to changes in the tension in such material, and a brake band leading around the spool support from an anchorage to a spring connection with said arm, the band being arranged so that its snubbing engagement on said spool support tends to pivot the arm to release said snubbing engagement of the band, and said spring connection including a stud fastened to said band, a lug pivoted on said arm through which said stud extends, and a spring compressed between said lug and the free end of the stud whereby an abrupt change in tension of such material and the corresponding change in the pivotal position of said arm is cushioned to effect a gradual change in the rotation of the spool support. Wire from a spool 10 mounted on ball bearings on a spindle 11 passes over a sheave 41 axially movable on a spindle 42, over four sheaves 44 on a fixed spindle 45 and three sheaves 48 on a spindle 49 attached to a lever 26 pivoted to the frame supporting the spool 10. The lever 26 is loaded by a weight 29 and has attached to it by a pivot pin 36 one end of a brake band 24 engaging a brake drum 20 on the spindle 11 and rotating with the spool 10 by means of a pin 17. Variations in tension of the wire passing over the sheaves 48 cause the lever 26 to swing under the action of or against the weight 29 to increase or decrease the braking action of the band 24 and thus increase or decrease the tension in the wire payed off the spool 10.
