1472283 Braiding machines D RICHARDSON 25 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 18201/74 Heading D1C A bobbin carrier for a high-speed maypole braider comprises a frame for rotatably mounting the bobbin 38 and slack take-up and tensioning means comprising a pair of guide sheaves 34, 35 fixed on the frame and an oscillatory compensator arm 56 pivotally mounted on the frame and having guide sheaves 62, 64, 71 for guiding the strand from the bobbin in a substantially S or Z path between the sheaves 34, 35. A clutch spring 84 normally couples a fixed hub member 30 to a hub member 87 rigid with the bobbin to prevent rotation of the latter but is releasable by a lever 91 actuable by the arm 56. The assembly of 30, 87, 84 and 56 is hinged at 22 to allow replacement of the bobbin. During the sinuous motion of the carrier in use the pay out sheave 35 maintains a constant orientation to the braiding point and arm 56 adopts the Fig. 3 position at its closest points to the latter while the strand tension causes anticlockwise rotation of the arm as the carrier moves away from the braiding point. At its furthest points, the arm 56 trips lever 91 to pay out more strand. An adjustable torsion spring 74 biasses the arm to the Fig. 3 position to take up slack. The carrier is suitable for textile or metallic strands (e.g. for making high pressure hoses) and spring 74 is adjusted accordingly by means of notches 80.
