Abstract

807,174. Reel brakes. STANDARD MACHINERY CO. Aug. 30, 1956 [Dec. 9, 1955], No. 26566/56. Class 103 (1). In a reel pay-off device for unwinding wire or other continuous flexible stock W over a bodily movable guide or dancer roller 16, when the movement of such roller is caused by the variation of tension in the wire W to control the force applied by a brake shoe 158 to the drum 96, the brake actuating linkage includes a main spring 22 connected to a fixed anchorage and a weaker spring 218 adapted resiliently to oppose the take-up of lost-motion in a link 182. The arrangement prevents the strong main spring 22 having a direct action upon the brake shoe. Compression and extension of spring 218, Fig. 4 (not shown) within the strut 182 will normally be sufficient to vary the brake force for the changes in tension likely to take place during normal running, but if due to breakage of the flexible stock, the dancer roller 16 should move from the full line to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1, thus taking up all the lost-motion between the end of adjustable screwed rod 214, the stronger main spring 22 becomes operative to apply the brake strongly.
