743,355. Winding and unwinding webs. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. June 8, 1954 [June 9, 1953], No. 15879/53. Class 100 (1). A strip is tensioned during winding or unwinding by one part of the strip engaging another part of the strip moving in the opposite direction. As shown, a strip 1 is drawn off a reel 2 at a point 3, passes around a guide roller 5, down between pressure rollers 6 and 7, around a guide roller 8, around the reel 2, down between the rollers 6 and 7, around a guide roller 9, and up between rollers 6 and 7. The roller 6 is carried by an arm 10 engaged by a leaf spring 11 adjustable by a screw-threaded rod 12 engaging a pivotally mounted block 13. The rod 12 may be disengaged from the spring 11 by rocking a handle 16 away from a stop 15. The part of the strip passing around the reel periphery serves as a reel brake. During winding, the part of the strip passing around the reel periphery rotates the reel, the strip being tensioned before winding by the strip engaging, between the rollers 6 and 7, a portion moving in the opposite direction. To obviate the effects of snatching, the roller 7 may be pressed towards the roller 6 by a relatively strong spring, or a further guide roller may be provided and be spring-pressed and connected by a lost-motion device with a pivotal mounting carrying the roller 7 to move the roller 7 momentarily from operative position.
