[Also in Groups VIII and XVI] In a machine for forming bias binding (see Group VIII), the strips of binding are pressed between rollers 1, 2 and wound into rolls side by side on a spindle 5. During winding, the rolls rest on roller 1, spindle 5 being carried on a pivoted arm 30 which rises as the rolls increase but which is prevented from falling, when roller 1 is moved on its supporting arms 3 at the end of the winding operation, by engagement of a dog 31 on a ratchet arm 31. The machine is stopped, when the rolls reach the desired size, either manually by movement of arms 3 or automatically on movement into a predetermined position of arms 33<SP>1</SP> carrying spring fingers 9. Fingers 9 prevent unwinding of the rolls when roller 1 is moved. To fasten off the binding on the rolls prior to cutting off the rolls from the bias binding strips, a strip of adhesive tape is stretched across the rolls adjacent to fingers 9. Arms 35 are then lowered so that (a) spring fingers 10 hold the tape on each roll, (b) blades 11 sever the tape between adjacent rolls and (c) U-shaped clips 12 press the severed ends of the tape downwardly against the sides of the rolls.
