Abstract

828,534. Adhesive tape dispensers. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Jan. 9, 1956 [Jan. 18, 1955]., No. 1536/55. Class 18. A device for forming tabs on adhesive tape comprises a roll support and fixed and moveable platforms 14, 15, the latter being biased towards the former, withdrawal of tape separating the platforms to which the tape adheres. On the tape being cut by a knife 16, the platforms are again brought together, forming a tab 29 by which the next length required may be grasped. As tape is withdrawn, it rotates a roller 8 geared to a spindle 10, the latter being spring biassed to rotate anti-clockwise (as shown), but being rotated clockwise by the roller 8. The platform 15 is mounted on an arm 17 connected by a rod 22 to a member 23 having a friction grip 25 on the spindle 10. Clockwise rotation of the spindle 10 causes the platforms to separate until the arm 17 contacts an adjustable stop 26. The grip 25 may then slip. When the tape is severed, the spindle 10 rotates anti-clockwise automatically to bring the platforms together. Means for limiting the amount of tape withdrawn is provided in the form of a dial, Fig. 1 (not shown) mounted disengageable on the spindle 10 and having a stop for contacting a fixed lug on the dispenser body. The dial may be disengaged from the spindle 10 and rotated to space its stop a predetermined peripheral distance from the lug and then re-engaged with the spindle. The spindle 10 may then be rotated by the drawing off of tape until the stop and lug contact each other.
