1495466 Applying adhesive tape MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 19 Sept 1975 38627/75 Heading B8F In a device applying a length of tape from a supply to a substrate comprising a head, means defining a tape path to the head, and a knife for severing an applied length of tape, the free end portion of the tape is supported by a pair of brushes each comprising a multiplicity of parallel resilient spaced bristles extending from a backing towards the other brush and into the tape path, whereby the tape may be disengaged from the brushes during application of the tape end to the substrate, and re-engaged prior to the severing. Fig. 1 shows a hand held device comprising a frame 13 having a shoe 19 for engagement with the corner of a box to which pressure sensitive adhesive tape is to be applied, and an L-shaped aperture 25 having legs 29, 30 in which block 24 is slidably mounted and movable by pneumatic jacks 68, 70. Block 24 pivotally supports a pair of arms 44, 46 on pin 48 (only shown in Fig. 4), the arms supporting leaf spring 34 and the pair of brushes 43. The arms are biased by spring 49 so as to protrude from the frame as shown in Fig. 1. The path from the reel 51 of tape 53 is defined by corrugated rolls 54, 56, 58, 59. The head also supports leaf spring 39, and the frame supports a trigger 15 and pneumatic valve operating arms such as 90, 106. At the beginning of a cycle, the tape end is engaged with the brushes as in Fig. 4. Application of the shoe 19 to a box corner deflects the arms 44, 46 to within the frame, which disengages the tape end from the brushes and applies it to the box, and readies a pneumatic circuit. The latter is then operable by trigger 15, which causes operation of jack 68 to traverse the head along leg 29 applying the tape by spring 34, and then of jack 70 to traverse the head along leg 30 applying the tape by spring 39. During the latter movement, the arms 44, 46 are free to be pivoted by spring 49 so that the brushes can re-engage the strip, so that when the latter is severed by knife 124, the strip end is held by the brushes. The jacks automatically return the head to its starting position.
