Abstract

810,803. Applying adhesive tape. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. June 16, 1955 [June 18, 1954], No. 17457/55. Class 73 A device for applying pressure-sensitive adhesive tape, e.g. around wiring of electrical systems in aircraft, comprises a mounting 10, Fig. 1a, for a supply roll of tape 17 hawing a pistol grip handle 11 and an elongated snout 13 with an end portion 14 which, as shown, is of arcuate form. Tape is withdrawn along this snout with its non-adhesive side in contact therewith and at the end portion 14, the tape first passes under a tape retaining roller 15 with its adhesive side in contact therewith and then its non- adhesive side extends over a tape applier, such as a roller 18, at the outer end of the snout 13. A thrust member 41, Fig. 5, extending and movable along the snout 13 terminates in a cutter 19 and is actuated by a button 12 or a trigger located on the handle 11 or inner end of the snout to advance the cutter 19 and sever the tape between an article being taped and the tape applier 18. As shown in Fig. 5 the snout 13 comprises an external case formed -by a channel member 30 terminating in side tips 34 between which the applying roller 18 is mounted; a second shallow channel member 36 is fitted within the channel member 30 with its edges abutting the base 33 of the channel member 30. The channel member 36 extends at least along the arcuate portion 14 and has a series of tape-supporting protrusions 37 and terminates in a tape applying section with a flat portion 39. Ears 42 on the channel member 36 support the roller 15. The two members 30, 36 combine to form a pair of passages, the first being an outer tape passage 44 and the second an inner enclosed passage 45 for the thrust member 41. A removable cover may be fastened along the open side of the snout 13. In operation, having engaged by hand the end tab 21 of the tape with the article 22 as shown in Fig. 2, the device is pulled away from and then moved under the article 22 to the position shown in Fig. 3; tape is thereby withdrawn from the supply roll and is taut between the applying roller 18 and the article 22. The button 12 is then pressed to actuate the cutter 19 which severs the tape just beyond the roller 18 to provide a new end tab 24, Fig. 4, the wrap 23 then being completed manually. The thrust member 41 may be actuated in various ways, Figs. 6, 7 (not-shown) indicating two alternative forms.
