A V-sealer which applies pressure-sensitive adhesive tape to the retreating face of a carton has a presser 19 on a slidably-mounted arm 18 pivotally connected (at 22) to a retractable tape-applying member 3. The member 3 is carried on a bell-crank lever 4 pivoted to a side frame plate 5 at 6 and 15 is spring biased at 7. The arm 18 has a groove 21 in which slides a stud 20 fixed on the frame 5. Tape 13 from a roll 11 is led to the member 3 and is retained there by a finger 9 carried on a pivoted arm 8. A roller 24 on a flexible wire 25 gives additional support to the tape when the finger 9 is disengaged. A package 2 moving along the pathway 1 presses back the projecting finger of the arm 8 and contacts the leading end of the tape on the member 3. The member 3 is thereby tilted together with the lever 4 and wipes the tape along the underside of the package. This movement of the lever 4 draws down the arm 18 so that the presser 19 is also under the package. The package then cocks against a spring 18a a pivoted arm 16 which carries a knife 17. Release of the arm 16 at the rear edge of the package allows the knife 17 to rise and cut the tape leaving the leading end of the main tape supply lying along the member 3 ready for the next cycle. The presser 19 then rolls over the rear edge and up the retreating face of the packet to wipe on the severed end of the applied strip. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the tape is retained on the member 3 by a withdrawable spike instead of by the finger 9 and the arm 18 slides through a pivoted roller slideway fixed to the plate 5 instead of on a pin 20.
