A friction brake restains rotation of the roll. To apply tape, the dispenser is moved to the left with the member 7 held in its lowermost position with the pressure roll 10 projecting beneath the casing. When the desired length has been applied, the member 7 is released and movement of the dispenser to the left continued. The tension in the tape shifts the member 7 upwardly until the tape engages a knife 8 and is severed thereby. The free end of the tape on the roll then adheres to an edge 5c of the slot 5. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown) the pressure member is provided by an arcuate member mounted for arcuate movement in the casing and retained in its lowermost position by a catch. In another modification (Fig. 10, not shown) the pressure member is a cam member pivotally mounted in the casing and retained in its lowermost position by a catch. Release of the catch permits clockwise movement of the cam under the tape tension so that the tape can be severed. This arrangement can be further modified by mounting the tape severing knife on the cam.
