Abstract

872,896. Applying adhesive tape. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd., T. J. Sept. 7, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 40720/58. Class 73. Relates to a hand applicator for adhesive tape 51 from a reel 33 on a support 32 dismountable from a frame 35 which is led over the forward face of the front one 40 of a pair of rollers 40, 45 in tandem which press the tape on to a work-surface when they are pushed downwards and forward by a handle 37; the applicator having a flat cutting blade 50 whose saw edge projects into the gap between the rollers to a small distance from the tape and also means whereby, when the applicator is tilted to lift the tape between the rollers off the work-surface, the blade can advance substantially in its own plane to cut the tape, leaving one severed end to be pressed on and the other ready for further application. The knife 50 is mounted at one end of a rocking frame 42 pivoted to the main frame 35 at 41. The frame 42 carries a roller 47 which by contacting the work-surface when the applicator is tilted causes the knife 50 to pivot forward within limits permitted by a screw. 53 projecting from the frame 42 through an arcuate slot 52 in the main frame .35. A bar 38 between the side plates of the frame 35 serves to retain the cut end of the tape on the roller 40 for further application. In Fig. 1, (not shown) the frame 42 and roller 47 are omitted and the knife is pushed forward against a spring by finger pressure on .a press-button. If dry gummed tape is used, a moistening device may be provided.
