A device for applying pressure sensitive adhesive tape has a member 26, which by relative movement to a package applies the leading end of the tape and on which the tape rests supported by a swinging member 34 which advances and retracts around the edge of the member 26 and in its advanced position holds the tape thereon. The member 26 shown as a plate, but which may be a roller, is fixed on a plate 3 which is pivoted at 10 between side plates 1 and 2 and spring-urged at 28. Tape from a reel 19 is led over a non- return roller 64 and a-roller 9 on to the bottom of the shaped plate which constitutes the member 26 where it is retained by a roller 65 on a spring 43. Coaxially pivoted with roller 9 are two retangular plates 36, 37 on either side of member 26. The plates 36, 37 are urged forwardly around their pivot by a spring and carry contact horns 74 at their top corners. They have the V-shaped members 34 pivoted on the top edges. The plate 3 is pivoted at ,33 to a lever 14 which passes through rollers 50, spring urged at 35 and pivoted on plate 1, and which carries a roller 17 and a guide plate 38. A cross-bar 45 serves as a stop to limit turning of the lever 14 and plater 3. A plate 68, pivoted to plate 2 at 60 and spring-urged at 29 carries a serrated knife 25. When a package advances along the conveyer z-z its front face meets the horns 74 and it presses the. plates 36, 37 back against their spring until they lie flush with the sides of the member 26. The members 34 are thereby caused to retract their front ends 31 around the sides of the member 26 so that the face of the package contacts the tape. Pressure on the face of the member 6 causes the plate 3 to pivot against the spring 29 as indicated in Fig. 2. The tape,then lies over a guide roller 10 as well as two rollers 64 and 9 and is applied by the member 26 to the underface of the package. The package then meets the edge of the plate 68 and rotates it to cock the knife 25. Movement of the bar 14 consequent on the rotation of plate 3 draws the roller 17 to the position 17a (Fig. 2). After the trailing edge of the package has cleared. the plate 68 the latter springs up so that the knife cuts the tape. Application of the severed strip of tape to the underside of the package continues until the trailing edge clears the guide plate 38. After this the plate 3 is free to return to its starting position and to draw the lever 14 with it so that the roller 17 moves from 17a to 17 along the course indicated in Fig. 2 and presses the free end of the stripon to the rearward face of the package.
