Package sealing apparatus advances the leading edge of a continuous adhesive strip to a package top where a presser member acts through distortable non adhesive strip to apply the adhesive leading edge to the package top, holds the package and adhesive strip stationary whilst it forces the tape on to the side of the package, advances the adhesive strip to be cut and applies its severed end. Strip 26 from a roll 16 on a horizontally reciprocating carriage 14 passes over rollers 22, 23 and its free end projects beyond the nip between a' roller 29 and a leaf-spring 30 guided by the check-plates of a member 27. The member 27 can pivot on a pin 31 within limits allowed by a slot 33. An adjustable band-brake 18, 19, 20, 21 checks rotation of the roll 16. A package 10 advances along a conveyer (not shown) between the carriage 14 and the presser assembly. Synchronously with the advance, the carriage 14 is reciprocated to protrude the end of the strip 26 over the package top. A cam-operated linkage 45, 47 then depresses the presser arm 45 to press on and hold the strip. The carriage 14 then moves back thereby withdrawing more strip. A non-adhesive web 59 extending resiliently from the presser pad around rollers 57, 58 to an anchor spring 60 on another cam-operated linkage 56, 46, 52 moves down as shown in Fig. 3B constraining the strip and, simultaneously, causing a length of it to be severed by a stationary blade 36. Final downward movement of the arm 56 causes the web 59 to press the severed adhesive strip on to the side of the package.
