Abstract

1,071,018. Packages. H. H. BLUMER. July 23, 1965 [July 31, 1964], No. 31411/65. Heading B8C. A package of a stack of flat articles comprises a non-adhesive tape 1 extending around three sides of the stack and a pressure sensitive adhesive tape 2 extending across the other side, the end portions (la), (2a) being joined together. The end portion (la) of non-adhesive paper or cellulose acetate tape, Fig. 1 (not shown), is turned back at (1b) and overlied by the end of the pressure sensitive adhesive tape (2a) which overlies the adjacent single layer of the non-adhesive tape. A like construction occurs at the bottom face of the package. A stack S of sheets &c. to be packaged, is placed on a ram 23 and against a guide 11, which is adjustable with respect to a fixed guide 8. The adhesive tape 2 is joined to the non-adhesive tape 1 initially manually and then by the previous packaging operation as later described. The ram 23 travels upwards over support rollers 22, bringing the stack S into contact with the tapes, until it abuts a stop 28. The halting of the ram 23 stops the unwinding of the tape 2, Fig. 5 (not shown). Just prior to the halting of the ram 23 a pin 26 engages a pawl 49 to release a second ram 33 which travels perpendicularly to the ram 23, by lifting a tooth 49a out of engagement with a tooth 50a on the second ram. A clamping face 40a on the ram 33 pinches the tape 1, which passes through slots 33, 35, 39 in the ram, against a member (51), Fig. 6 (not shown). When the second ram 33 advances further, a screw 70 on the machine frame trips a lever 44 on the ram and releases a knife which moves forward under spring bias along the second ram and severs the tape 1. The knife advances further and severs the tape 2 against a movable clamping block 52 the projecting portions of the ram pinching the tapes together at two positions on either side of the knife. The earlier cutting of the tape 1 causing its cut ends to be spaced by a greater distance than those of the tape 2 so producing the overlap portions 2a. Catches 69a on leaf springs 69 on the ram 33 engage spring bars 53 on the movable block 52. The drive is then reversed and both rams begin to move back to their original position, the clamps 69a on the ram 33 pulling the clamping block 52 with the ram to fold the tape portions extending around the stack underneath the latter and forming an identical joint between the portions extending from the reels 7, 36, the adhesive tape adhering to the portion (1b) of the non-adhesive tape 1, Fig. 8 (not shown). Upon further backward movement of the ram 33, the block 52 is halted by the member 51 whereupon the clamps 69a are released, the spring bars 53 returning the block 52 to its original position. The taped stack S in the guides 8, 11 is ejected by the next stack passing through the machine and may fall into a shoot or on to a conveyer.
