Class 73 Two lengths 25, 26, of adhesive tape are applied as shown to the faces adjoining the edges 40, 41, of a carton by apparatus incorporating two reciprocating tape applying heads 16, 17, which apply the tape to the surface 27, and two movable tape severing and buffing means 30, 31, which reciprocate to sever and apply the tape to the faces 35, 36 after the heads 16, 17, have moved through a cycle of reciprocation. In the construction shown, the cartons 11, 12, 13, move along a track 10 in the direction 15, as seen in plan in Fig. 1, and the heads 16, 17, move on horizontal tracks 20, 21. Each head carries a supply roll 47 of tape 10 on a drum 47, see Fig. 6, and a spring urged applying arm 52. When the head moves to the right, the arm 52 is rocked slightly in a clockwise direction, by a cam, Fig. 5 (not shown), and is held thus by a spring-controlled detent 62. Towards the end of the stroke to the right the detent is rocked by meeting a fixed stop and thus releases the arm 52 which moves upwards to apply the end 97 of the tape to the face 27 of the carton. After a slight further movement to the right the head moves to the left and the arm 52 presses the tape to the face 27. When the head has returned to the initial position shown, the device 31 moves upwards along its track 33, a knife 87 thereon serving to sever the tape and a roller 90 thereon serving to press the loose end of the tape against the face 36 of the carton. A roller 90 or a spring-controlled arm pivoted to the arm 52 provides a resistance to the upward thrust of the knife during the severing operation.
