652,631. Feeding webs. SAPAL SOC. ANON. DES PLIEUSES AUTOMATIQUES. Dec. 29 1947, No. 34394. Convention date, March 22, 1946. [Class 100 (i)] A device for the step-by-step advance and periodical transverse cutting of a strip 5 of wrapping material in a wrapping machine is characterised by mechanism serving after each cutting operation and prior to the next advance movement automatically and positively to retract the leading part of the strip, this mechanism including means operable in timed relation to the advance movements for pressing the strip and a surface of a retracting member together, actuating means for effecting displacement of the surface of the retracting member, and means for adjusting the extent of this displacement. The strip 5 is drawn forwards by a pair of grippers 3, 4 carried by a carriage 2 which is moved to and fro in a guide 1 by means of a link 8, a lever 7 and a cam (not shown), mounted on a shaft 6. The jaws 3, 4 are biassed to closed position and may be separated by means of a lever 9 which cooperates with a mobile control member 10. The cutting is effected by cutters 11. The mechanism for retracting the strip comprises a friction roller 17 driven by a toothed sector 20 which rocks about an axle 21, and a second friction roller 22 borne by an arm 23 integral with a shaft 24. By means not shown, the shaft 24 is given an angular rocking motion so that the strip 5 is pressed between rollers 17, 22 when roller 17 is being rotated anti-clockwise, but so that roller 22 is lifted clear of the strip when roller 17 is rotated clockwise. Sector 20 is rocked by means of links 30 and 26 connected to a bell-crank lever 25 rocked by a cam (not shown), on the shaft 6. The extent of the rocking motion of the sector 20 and hence the distance through which the strip 5 is retracted is adjustable by means of a slide 27 in a link motion 28, the slope of the latter being altered by turning a screwed rod 31. The grippers 3, 4 may also carry with the strip 5 one from a pile of labels 12 carried by a support 19, the lowermost label being separated from the pile by pneumatic means (not shown), and a separating member 13.
