[Also in Group XXIII] A machine for severing axially moving work 18, such as rods or tubes in a draw bench, has a carriage 1 movable at the same speed as the work by means of a slide bracket 5<SP>1</SP> on the carriage and a roller 4 on a chain 3 driven synchronously with the work-feeding means and an auxiliary carriage 7 carrying a tiltable rotary knife 10 and clamps 19, 20 for gripping the work is mounted on the carriage with limited to-andfro movement against the action of springs 8 so that, if the work slips in the feeding means, this slip is taken up by the movement of the auxiliary carriage without exerting a force on the knife. The knife is tilted into its operative position about a pivot 11 by a stationary cam 14 engaged by a roller on a lever 17 connected to the knife arm 12 by a rod 15, the lever being mounted to deflect on the return stroke of the carriage and leave the knife in its inoperative position. The clamps comprise adjustable bars 19 and a wedge 20 which is movable along an adjustable counter wedge 21 and is operated by a stationary cam 24 and a roller lever 25 on a double lever 26. Movement of the lever 26 compresses a spring 29 and at the same time rocks a lever 27 so that through a spring 31 the wedge is displaced.
