Abstract
764,708. Shearing. NUFFIELD TOOLS & GAUGES, Ltd. Aug. 12, 1955 [June 2, 1954], No. 16288/54. Class 83 (4). In an automatic shearing- machine for cutting continuouslyfed thin-walled metal tubing into equal lengths, the tubing impels in the direction of feed a reciprocatable unit comprising a die set, an associated cutting-tool and a clamping device which clamps the unit to the tubing; and the whole machine is powered and controlled by the movement of the tubing. The machine shown in plan in Fig. 1 is designed as an attachment to a tube rolling- machine. The tubing 6 fed by rollers engages an adjustable stop 7 carried by a shaft 9 slidable in the frame 1 to cause an arm 11 mounted on the other end of the shaft 9 to engage a rod 12 in the reciprocatable unit 3 shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The rod 12 moves to an operative position determined by a detent 13 in which a cam on the shaft depresses a plunger 18 to force together dies 14 having recesses for supporting the tubing 6 during shearing. Also movement of a coned surface 26 on the rod 12 allows two spring-loaded clamping members to grip the tubing which then impels the unit 3 forwards along rails 2. Engagement of a cam 28 on the arm 11 with a roller 29 on the frame temporarily deflects the arm 11 and stop 7 against spring-action into an inoperative position. On each side of the frame 1 are inclined levers 36 pivoted at one end, and spring-urged at the other end against adjustable stops, so that during forward movement of the unit 3 a pair of rollers 35 on the unit 3 coact with the underside of levers 36 to reciprocate a pointed cutter 30 to shear the tubing. At the end of the forward movement of the unit 3 a stop 41 returns the rod 12 to its inoperative position to open the dies 14 and the clamping members whereupon the unit 3 is returned by springs 4 surrounding the rods 2, the rollers 35 engaging the upper sides of the levers 36. This cycle of operations is then repeated.
