[Class 31 (i)] Apparatus for cutting strip material travelling with a conveyer comprises, in combination, a movable carriage assembly, a cutting mechanism on said carriage assembly, means for moving said cutting mechanism transversely of the conveyer to cut the material, means for connecting the carriage assembly to the conveyer for movement therewith during the operation of the cutting mechanism and means for returning the carriage across the material to its initial position without cutting the material. As shown in Fig. 1, a conveyer 1 carrying a strip 6 of tyre tread has associated therewith a carriage 4 movable along the conveyer and carrying a secondary carriage 17 which moves across the conveyer during a cutting operation. A motor-driven cutting- knife 25 is carried on a plate 26 slidable on carriage 17 to bring the knife into the cutting position. After a cut has been made the plate 26 and knife 25 are retracted, the carriages 4 and 17 returning to their initial positions; the cutting operation is repeated at intervals determined by a timing mechanism 5 driven through a chain 98 from a sprocket on driving-shaft 52. The machine is electrically controlled through switches operated at each limit of travel of the carriages 4 and 17 and the plate 26.
