Abstract
553,764. Moulding sagger pins. DEHN, F. B. (Industrial Ceramic Products, Inc.). Aug. 18, 1941, No. 10505. [Class 87 (ii)] A clay column is extruded through triangular openings 5 in a nozzle 4 on to a conveyer belt 6, a cutter 28 cuts strands from the column and a second cutter 29 cuts the strands into pins of uniform length. The two cutting operations take place while the clay lengths are moving in the same direction as the conveyer belt. The speed of extrusion is less than the speed of the belt, so that slippage occurs between the strands and the belt prior to the first cutting operation. When the strands have been cut from the column they move away from the cut end thereof. When the pins reach A they are removed by hand on to a transversely-disposed conveyer 71 which carries them through a tunnel drier kiln 3. The cutter 29 is continuously driven, in synchronism with the belt 6, by an electric motor 25, and comprises a knife 50 disposed transversely (or obliquely) of the belt, the knife being carried by a vertical plunger 35 which is intermittently depressed, against a spring 55, by a cam 59 acting on a rocking arm 56. When the plunger 35 descends, knurled feet 49 on the knife assembly engage the belt, the movement of the belt being thereby imparted to the knife assembly which slides forward along a guide pin 38 against a spring 40 ; during this sliding movement the knife descends through a slot in a stripper member 53 and cuts through the strands, the cut surfaces being normal to the longitudinal axis of the strands. When the plunger 35 ascends, the spring 40 returns the knife assembly to its initial position. Spring-pressed rollers 65 resist raising of the belt by the feet 49. The cutter 28 is, in general, similar in construction to the cutter 29, but its plunger is solenoidoperated under manual switch control, and it has a plate which presses the cut clay strands into engagement with the belt to make them move with the belt away from the column.
