955,552. Cutting apparatus. G. H. LANGLEY Ltd., and VITAFOAM Ltd. April 12, 1962 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 1499/61. Heading B4B. [Also in Division G3] An apparatus for cutting or trimming material during linear travel comprises roller support means 8 for the material arranged on a carriage 5, two or more cutting driven discs 11 on the carriage, and means 18 which move the carriage transversely of the material so as to centralise the discs on the material under the control of feeler means 12 contacting the material. Material is fed over rollers 23, 8 to the cutting discs and then led over a further supporting roller 24 which is pivoted by arms 30 and driven by a roller 25 serving to tension the material and lead it to a batching drum 26; the drum 26 and roller 25 are driven by a belt or chain 29 and the rollers 23 and 8 may also be driven. The discs may be driven by individual variable-speed motors as shown or by a common drive shaft and arranged so that they can be moved manually into and out of their operative positions. A feeler finger 12 engaging one edge of the material is arranged to rock between microswitches 19, 20 to control a double-magnetic clutch means 21 of a motor 18 which rotates a screw-and-nut mechanism in the appropriate direction for centralising the carriage; alternatively, two feeler fingers may be provided one at each edge. The material may be cut into lengths by the addition of a cutter device which is operated to travel with and across the material after a set amount of travel of the material has been measured by a rotatable disc resting on the surface of the material.
