Apparatus for winding together common lengths of fabric cut off from a bale 9 on a measuring table 1 includes an inclined conveyer 4 arranged by the table 1 and comprising a circulating conveyer belt 12 and a winding arrangement 5 having a plurality of winding stations 8 which are equipped with rollers 22, 23 between which are situated roll formers 38 with lead webs 39 secured thereto, the rollers 22, 23 being driven from the belt 12 and each lead web 39 either comprising the end of a previous fabric length or a separate length connected to the roll former 38. The table 1 has a length measuring arrangement 2 and a cutting device 3. The arrangement 5 comprises two parts in star-form between which are mounted the stations 8 each constructed so that the centre of gravity thereof is always situated vertically beneath the pivot point of the bearing 7 thereof. The bale 9 rests between rollers 10, 11 which are motordriven. The belt 12 passes around rollers 13, 14 and a tensioning roller 15 and is driven by the roller 11. After passing the arrangement 2, the individual lengths are marked by an operator and when the marking reaches the device 3 the belt 12 is stopped, the device 3 is operated and then the belt 12 is restarted by means of control knobs 16, 17, 18. The cut length is fed over the conveyer 4 to one of the stations 8 and interrupts a light beam in a photo-cell and light source arrangement 19 to cause a magnet 21 to form a drive connection between gears 32, 34, Fig. 3 (not shown). The gear 32 is driven from the roller 14. A gear 28 is driven from the gear 34 and drives gears 26, 27 mounted on the shafts 24, 25 of the rollers 22, 23, respectively. The cut length is brought into engagement with the lead web 39 on the former 38 by a runway 41 pivoted on a spindle 40 and provided with a wedge-shaped guide 42, Figs. 2 and 3 (both not shown). As the trailing end of the length passes a photo-cell and light source arrangement 44, the runway 41 is moved towards the conveyer 4 by a magnet 46 which attracts a lever 47 rigidly mounted on the spindle 40. Thus, the trailing end is removed from the guide 42 and formed into a new lead web 39, Fig. 2 (not shown). A counter-weight 43 pivots the runway 41 to its initial position. The movement of the arrangement 5 to position the required winding station 8 adjacent the conveyer 4 takes place after the operation of a preselection control knob arranged beside the knobs 16, 17, 18.
