Abstract

648,757. Winding webs. LANGBO, G. April 3, 1947, No. 9152. Convention date, April 5, 1946. [Class 100 (i)] A machine for winding paper rolls from a web, comprises a plurality of spindles for the consecutive winding of the rolls, each of the spindles projecting from one end face of a continuously rotating drum and being associated with means for automatically cutting the paper web upon completion of the winding of a roll and expelling the completed roll along the winding spindle. The web 1 is consecutively wound on spindles 4, 5 and 6 projecting from the end face of a drum comprising end-plates 7 and 8 which are continuously rotated with a shaft 9 to bring each spindle into positions for winding, cutting and expulsion of a roll. The shaft 9 is journalled in a frame 10 while endplates 7 and 8 are rotated by a toothed rim 15 on the plate 8. The spindles 4, 5 and 6 are driven individually through friction clutches such as 13 by a common belt 14 such that only the spindle on which winding is actually being effected is driven, while the remainder act as guiding rolls. The friction clutches are operated by a cam 16 to decrease the speed of the spindles as the diameter of the rolls increases until the spindle is ultimately stopped when the roll is complete. The spindle 6, Fig. 2, carries a completed roll which has been wound during rotation of the drum from the position in which the spindle 6 occupies the position of the spindle 5. A projection 23 on a bar 20 slidable in a tube 21 engages a rotating, threaded pin 25 so that the end face 27 of a cutting device 22 on the bar 20 pushes the completed roll off the spindle. Simultaneously, a projection 23 on a bar 20 associated with the spindle 5 is disengaged from an arcuate rail (not shown) so that a cutting device 22 associated with the spindle 5 makes a quick movement to the right, Fig. 2, under the influence of a spring (not shown) to cut the web. Due to the shape of the cutting device, the remaining portion of web is carried around the spindle 5 to commence winding a fresh roll; at the same time, the spindle 5 is rotated with the clutch 13 fully engaged so that peripheral speed of the spindle is greater than the linear velocity of the paper, thus helping to retain the paper on the spindle. The free end of the completed roll may be glued to the roll by any convenient method or device. The cutting device associated with the spindle 6 is held in its extreme left-hand position by the projection 23 engaging the arcuate rail until the spindle 6 reaches the position occupied by the spindle 5 in Fig. 1, when the sequence of operations is repeated.
