Device for driving two superimposed elements of packaging material in an automatic folder. The present invention relates to a device for driving two elements> mperposed in material packing in an automatic folder fed with two strips which are cut simultaneously into superimposed sections.
In automatic folding machines fed by two strips of packaging material which are simultaneously cut into superimposed sections, which must be folded together around an object to be packaged, the following problem is generally encountered:
it is desirable that two sections do not have the same length, that which is in direct contact with the object to be wrapped and which can be, for example, a metal foil, which may be smaller than the outer foil, which may be in paper for example. Using sheets of equal dimensions, we use a. unnecessarily large quantity of the material constituting. the leaf = interior.
The present invention aims to provide a simple device, making it possible to obtain automatically in a single cut two sections of different length, each of these sections having exactly the. necessary and sufficient length to achieve good packaging.
The device according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a movable dragging clamp whose jaws effect one. relative sliding movement while they are clamping the said packing material elements, to lock them by sliding to some degree one on the other.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the positive device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view. Fig. 2 is a view from the. left on the fi. 1.
Fig. 3 is a diagram, intended to illustrate the operation.
Fig. 4 is a second diagram relating to a subsequent phase of operations with respect to FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a chronological diagram of the various operations of the device. The device shown comprises a carriage 1, sliding in a slideway 2 and carrying a clamp, the two jaws of which 3, 4 grip the free end of two packaging strips 5, 6 which are cut periodically and simultaneously by scissors 7. The carriage 1 performs a reciprocating movement in the slide 2, the jaw 3 moving away at certain times from the jaw 4 under the control of a movable member 8, itself controlled by means of a carne not shown and acting on a roller 9, integral with a pivot lever 10 both at 11 on the carriage 1 and which also carries the jaw 3.
The upper jaw 4 is carried by one of the ends of a lever 12, integral with a pivot 13, arranged in a guide 14 of the carriage 1. The lever 12 is articulated by its other end at 15 on a lever 16, pivoting at 17 on carriage 1 and provided with a roller 18 cooperating with a movable control member 19, itself controlled by a cam, not shown. The lever 16 is subjected to the action of a spring 20, bearing on a part 21 integral with the carriage. 1 -and tending to constantly apply the roller 18 against the member 19.
It is easy to see by examining fig. 1 that a vertical movement of the member 19 has the effect of sliding the jaw 4 on the jaw 3 to the right if it is an upward movement of the member 19, and towards the left, if it is a descent movement (in the latter case, the movement is controlled by the spring 20).
The guide 14 is shaped so that, during this relative sliding movement of the jaw 4 with respect to the jaw 3, the tightening of the two jaws remains substantially constant. This relative sliding movement of the two jaws can take place during the movement of the carriage along the slide 2.
The operation of the device represented is the. next: When the scissors 7 have just cut two superimposed sections 5 ', 6' in the bands 5 and 6, the free ends of these bands, which are located exactly opposite each other, are gripped by the clamp according to fig. 1 and 2, the jaws of which clamp these ends together.
The carriage 1 then moves to the right by a certain amount. At the same time as the carriage 1 thus advances, the member (the control 19 rises and slides the jaw 4 to the right with respect to the jaw 3, which produces a sliding of the strip 6 with respect to the band 5 with the result that, when the carriage 1 reaches the end of the stroke just indicated, the end of the band 6 exceeds the band 5 by an amount equal to a (fig. 3 ).
After that, the closing of the scissors detaches from the rest of the strip the new superimposed sections 5 'and 6', then the carriage 1 performs a new forward movement to the right bringing the sections 5 'and 6' opposite the object to be wrapped ("centering" of the cut sections relative to the object to be wrapped). While this centering movement is carried out, the control member 19 is lowered by a certain amount, which has the result of sliding the jaw 4 to the left with respect to the jaw 3, under the spring action 20.
This sliding movement, in the example shown in the drawing, is of an amplitude half of the previous sliding movement, which was in the opposite direction. At the end of the centering movement, the two sections will therefore be in the relative position indicated in fig. 4. where each of the ends of section 6 'protrudes from the ends of section 5' by an amount equal to 2. Then, the jaws open under the control of member 8, the carriage performs a third movement.
to the right, relatively short, to disengage the clamp from sections 5 ', 6', then a. place the return of the clamp in the original position, and the operations described start again. During this return movement, the member 19 returns the jaw 4 to its initial position relative to the jaw 3 (position shown in FIG. 1).
On the chronological diagram following fig. 5, the operations have been designated as follows: A1: closing of the gripper, A2: opening of the gripper, Bl: first movement to advance the gripper to the right (fig. 3), 132: second movement advance of the gripper to the right, corresponding to "centering". 133: third forward movement of the clamp to the right, corresponding to the disengagement of the latter, B4: return movement of the clamp, Cl:
first relative movement of the jaw 4 relative to the jaw 3, corresponding. the shift of the quantity a (FIG. 3), C2: second relative movement of the jaw 4 with respect to the jaw 3, corresponding to the passage of the relative position of the cut sections of the. fig. 3 to that following fig. 4, C3: third sliding movement of the jaw 4 relative to the jaw 3, corresponding to this return to the primitive position, D: cutting operation.
It is of course due, in certain cases, the second movement designated by C2 could not be of amplitude half of the first; it might even not exist, the offset of the two sections then appearing "only at one of their ends.
