[Also in Group XVII] In a wrapper feed mechanism (see Group XVII), a web 12 is fed from a roll 19 over jockey rollers 20, 21 and along a table 18 by a reciprocating picker comprising a lower jaw fixed to a vee slide 17 and an upper jaw 10 carried by a spindle 22 secured to a rocker arm 23 fitted with a roller 24 engaging a pivoted bar 25 which is rocked by a cam, not shown, to open and close the jaws periodically. The picker executes a feed stroke followed by a dwell, during which knives 13, 14 sever a wrapper from the web, and is then given a further movement to carry the severed wrapper to the wrapping mechanism, after which the jaws open and the picker returns to its initial position. The slide 17 is coupled by a link 26 to a quadrant 28 which is pivoted at 49 to a lever 29 mounted on a shaft 30 and meshes with a second quadrant 35 also mounted on the shaft. The lever carries a roller 31 acted on by a cam 32 on a driven shaft 33, and the quadrant 35 is coupled by a link 36 to a lever 37 carrying a roller 38 acted on by a second cam 39 on the shaft. During the feed stroke of the picker, the movements of the quadrant 35 and lever 29 are synchronized so that the two quadrants and lever move as a unit about the shaft 30. After the dwell period, the lever 29 remains stationary, but the quadrant 35 is given a further anticlockwise movement to cause the quadrant 28 to rock in a clockwise direction about the pivot 49 and impart the further movement to the slide. In order that the feed stroke of the picker may be increased with a corresponding decrease in its subsequent further movement and vice versa, the end of the link 26 is pivoted to trunnions 41 on a nut 44 which is movable in a guide slot 45 and engages a screw 42 mounted in the quadrant 28. The screw may be rotated by a knob 43 to adjust the end of the link towards and away from the pivot 49 or shaft 30.
