Abstract

622,593. Cutting and punching machines. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., RUSSELL, A., and PARKER, M. March 31, 1947, No. 8664. [Classes 31 (i) and 31 (ii)] Also in Group XVII] In a wrapping machine provided with a coding device and comprising a wrapper support and a pin-carrying member movable towards and away from the support to pierce the wrapper in timed relationship with the feed of the wrapper, the wrapper support comprises an assemblage of compacted bristles, or the like with their ends facing the pins. The bristles 52, Fig. 4, may be held in a central cavity in a stock 53 by a fixative 55 around the inner ends of the bristles. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, the wrapper 10 is fed in a continuous length from a reel 11 around a jockey roller 18, a draw-off roller 19, rollers 20, 21, through the coding device 22, and feed rollers 14, 15 to cutting knives 12, 13. A cam 23 operates a follower 24 on a bell-crank lever 25 pivoted at 26. One arm of the lever 25 is connected by a link 30 to an arm 31 pivoted on a shaft 32 and carrying a quadrant 33 engaging a gear 17 on the feed roller 15 which is geared to the roller 14. The other arm of the lever 25 is connected by a link 27 to an arm 28 pivoted at 29 and carrying the draw-off roller 19. A cam 39 concentric with the cam 23 vertically reciprocates a lever 37 through a follower 38. The lever 37 is connected to an arm 36 on a shaft 35. The shaft 35 carries an arm 51 connected to the reciprocating knife 12 and at each end a cam 34, the arms of which co-operate with followers 41, 43 on bell-crank levers 42, 44 rotatably carried on the shaft 32. The arm 42 carries the upper feed roller 14, and the arm 44 is connected to a clamp 45 of the coding device which is connected by arms 46, 47 to a fixed bracket 48. The clamp 45 carries on longitudinal ridges a member carrying coding pins 50. The member can be slid out of the clamp and replaced by a member having a different formation of pins. The pins 50 co-operate with the bristles in the stock 53. Operation.-When the lever 25 is moved anticlockwise, the draw-off roller 19 pulls forward a loop of the wrapper. On clockwise movement of the lever 25 the quadrant 33 actuates the rollers 14 and 15 feeding the loop of wrapper past the knives 12, 13. Upward movement of the lever 37 causes rotation of the shaft 35 whereby the clamp 45 moves downward, the pins 50 perforating the wrapper and the knife 12 moves downward cutting off the requisite length of wrapper and the roller 14 is lifted clear of the roller 15 allowing the roller 15 to be rotated clockwise coinciding with the anticlockwise movement of the lever 25. In an alternative machine, wrappers 100, Fig. 5, are fed to the coding device individually by the feed mechanism described in Specification 559,357, [Group XVI]. A member 59, carrying a pin-carrying member 49 of the coding device, is reciprocated in timed relationship with the wrapper feed as described in the above Specification and causes the pins 50 to penetrate the wrapper 100 and the bristles 52 through a suitable aperture 62 in a control plate 60 which has a flared edge 61 for leading the wrapper into position.
