Abstract

842,501. Knitting-machines; clamping and severing devices. HANES HOSIERY MILLS CO. Feb. 5, 1958 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 3747/58. Class 74 (2). Yarn clamping and severing mechanism comprises an annulus 15 which rotates with the needle cylinder 1 and has sharp-edged teeth 16, and a cutter element 27 which can shear with the teeth 16. For severance after retraction of the yarn feed, the yarn, having been fed to the last needle, is caught in the teeth 16 and drawn round by rotation of the annulus 15 through points A and B, and passes over element 40 but beneath clamp 49 to point C. At this point, cam mechanism on the pattern drum actuates clamp 49 to hold the yarn, and cutter element 27 which shears with teeth 16 at point C, severing the yarn, the end Y of which remains clamped under clamp 49. When the yarn is fed again to the first needle, the end Y is dragged round by teeth 16 under element 40 (see Fig. 9) and is severed at point C. The clamp 49 is then opened and the end Y sucked away and blown into a basket by cam-operated pneumatic means.
