Abstract
742,572. Knitting-machines. TOONE (NOTTINGHAM), Ltd., B. April 29, 1952 [April 30, 1951], No. 10138/51. Class 74 (2). A circular knitting-machine has a yarn feeder 2 movable into and out of action in each of certain courses, a device within the needle circle and adjacent the feeder, for trapping the outgoing yarn and subsequently positioning it to be taken by the needles on re-introduction and a separate non-trapping cutter 27, independently slidable, circumferentially of the needle circle, on a fixed welt instrument cam ring, in timed relation with the change from knitting to non-knitting of the yarn, so that a cutting edge 46 thereof, near the inner side of the circle of needles, co-operates with the edge 45 of a knife ring 39 fast with the cam ring, to cut the yarn. The feeder 2, for splicing yarn, is swung into and out of action, about axis 2A, by the main cam drum, acting through a thrust bar 3 and is operatively connected to the cutter 27 through abutment screws 7, 13 on a member 5 swingable about axis 2A and co-operating abutments 8 on feeder 2 and 14 on a bell-crank lever 15, 16, linked to an eccentric disc, a peg on which engages a slot 41 in the cutter. The trapper is raised to inoperative position against the action of a spring, by the main cam drum, acting through a thrust bar 19, lever 18, also pivoted on axis 2A, and associated linkwork. Levers 15, 16 and 18 are connected by pin-andslot connections 20, 21. The arrangement of the cams for thrust bars 3 and 19 is such that, at the end of splicing, the cutter 27 is rendered inoperative before the feeder 2 is taken out, so that the thread passes into the normal trapper. Separate screw adjustment for the cutter is provided at 50. The trapper, which may also be raised normally through a knob and secured in that position, consists of two superimposed plates 60, 61. When the feeder 2 is taken out of action, a tapered part 62 on plate 60 guides the thread A between the plates and a part 66 directs it into a slot 65, the feeder end of the thread being carried above the upper end of a slot 64 and so deflected by a rounded part 63 of plate 60 that, when the feeder is again lowered, the thread passes down the slot 64 into a notch 67, which positions it for re-introduction. Specifications 532,520, 532,586, 550,102 and 559,952 are referred to.
