[Class 74(ii)] A knitting-machine has a throat plate that is lowered temporarily, under pattern drum control, on introduction of a new yarn so as to ensure engagement of that yarn by the needles, the throat plate and the yarn guide supported thereby being subsequently restored to normal feeding position. The invention is shown applied to a machine with a welt dial as described in Specification 102,711, [Class 74(ii)], on which is mounted a yarn clamp. The throat plate 18, Figs. 5 and 10, is pivoted' at 20 to the latch ring 2 which also carries pivoted yarn guides 44 that are movable into and out of operative position by springs and by thrust bars 48 controlled by a pattern drum 36 such as that described in Specification 12722/13, [Class 74(ii)]. At the inner end of the plate 18 an adjustable eccentric button 28 is provided for engagement by a thrust bar 30 that is movable under control of a cam 34 on the pattern drum. When the bar 30 is raised, the resulting tilting movement of the plate 18, against the action of a leaf spring 24, Fig..10, lowers the outer ledge 22, on which an operative yarn guide usually rests, to permit an abnormal downward movement of the incoming yarn guide. The tilting movement is limited by the head of an adjustable screw passing through the plate 18 into the latch ring. The corners of the throat plate are bevelled to cam badly placed latches towards open or closed position to avoid breakage.
