To facilitate making the fabric shown in Fig. 1 of Specification 507,660, web holders P are provided, having a yarn receiving ledge pa, a raised ledge ps and a throat pb at a level lower than the ledge pa. The web holders are cut away below the ledge pa so that a thread guide SF for an unknitted weft yarn can be introduced to feed its yarn to the rear side of the needles. Long and short shanked needles N', N<SP>2</SP> are arranged alternately and are operated by cam tracks disposed at different levels, and in operation yarn to be knitted by one set of needles N<SP>1</SP> is laid upon the ledges pa of partly advanced web holders disposed above the needles N<SP>2</SP>, and is knitted by the needles N<SP>1</SP>; subsequently the web holders are further advanced (Fig. 3), so that the loops of yarn they hold are received in the throats pb, and the needles N <SP>2</SP> are raised to take the loops from the web holders, which are retracted to withdraw them from the loops. Sinker loops held by the web holders disposed above the needles N<SP>1</SP> are taken similarly from those web holders and knitted. The high ledges ps serve to separate the sinker loops 3, Fig. 4, about to be transferred, from the old loops 4 about to be cast off the receiving needles. To ensure opening of the latches the needles are given a short raising and lowering movement. The knitting cams may be adjustable vertically in slidable members.
