Abstract
476,534. Knitting-machines. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. April 1, 1937, No. 9312. Convention date, April 1, 1936. [Class 74 (ii)] For tying-in an elastic or other yarn, e.g. in the upper end of a half-hose, a yarn finger 128 of a circular machine is withdrawn from feeding position without cutting the yarn, and then at a subsequent course is reintroduced at substantially the needle where it was withdrawn. All the needles n are lowered until they pass below the yarn finger 128, the finger is moved to operative position outside the needle circle, and the needles receiving the yarn are raised so that their hook ends are above the yarn finger end just after they pass the finger. In the arrangement described, the shorter-butted heel needles are divided into two sets having different lengths of butts n<1>, n<2>, and the longerbutted instep needles also are divided into two sets with butts n<3>, n<4> of different length. The butts n<2>, n<3>, n<4> are engaged by a lowering cam 383; and after passing the cam 383, the longest butts n<4> only are engaged by a raising cam 384. A cam 385 lowers the needles having butts n<1> to the new level of the longest butted needles. The shortest and longest butted needles which are those receiving the weft yarn y<1> are therefore selected for subsequent operation by a raising cam 388 which lifts these needles after they have passed the finger 128. A lowering cam 389 acts upon the butts of all the needles prior to the clearing of the needles to lower all the needles with the elastic or other weft yarn in their hooks before the needles are raised to take the knitted inelastic yarn. The method of operating the sinkers and the needles for the purpose of measuring off the weft yarn is described in Specification 454,078. A more pronounced ribbed appearance is obtained by causing the sinkers to slacken the wales on either side of the needles which tie in the weft, and mechanism for this purpose is described in U.S.A. Specification 1,189,220. British Specification 12722/13, [Class 74 (ii)], also is referred to.
