Abstract

474,930. Knitting - machines. HEMPHILL CO. June 10, 1936, No. 16240. Convention date, July 11, 1935. [Class 74 (ii)] Needle jacks 4 of a circular machine are provided with removable selecting butts 8 actuated by cams 22 so that the jacks are moved lengthways to bring butts 7 thereon into register with a cam 24 by which the jacks can be rocked. Rocking movement of a jack causes a hook-shaped portion 10 thereon to engage a corresponding hooked portion 11 of the needle. All the jacks 4 are lowered by a cam 26 engaging butts 6 thereon, so that the needles corresponding to the rocked jacks are lowered as at 28 so as either to form tuck stitches or miss stitches. Lowering of the needles by a cam 30 and engagement of the hooked portion 11 with a bevelled portion 35 of the jacks effects separation of the needles and jacks, and the jacks are lowered for reselection by a cam 39. The tricks for the needles and jacks may be constructed of sheet-metal having relatively wide portions 12, 13, 14 seating in grooves in the needle bed. In an alternative form, Fig. 6, the jacks and needles do not have hooked engagement, and the rocking movement of the jacks 41 brings the selected jacks into the path of a raising cam 52. Sinkers, pressers or needles may be operated in the same manner as the jacks 4, 41.
