Abstract
1,000,837. Knitting. TEXTILE MACHINE WORKS. March 16, 1962 [March 28, 1961], No. 10176/62. Headings D1C and D1K. In a multifeed rotary cylinder circular knitting machine, the needles are provided with jacks by which they may be selected to form design stitches, the needles being selected in one part of the cylinder at one feed and in another part of the cylinder at another feed and a complete circular course being knitted at each feed. As shown, at the main feed station 11 are provided forward and reverse stitch cams 15, 16, the latter being radially retractable, a centre cam 17, cams 20, 21 associated with needle raising cams 15, 16. Narrowing picks 22, 25 are provided adjacent cams 15, 16 and a widening pick 26 is also provided as are guard cams 23, 24 and a needle levelling cam 28. At station 12 are provided a retractable forward stitch cam 27 with associated cams 30, 31. During plain knitting needles 10 approaching station 11 at tucking level 29 are raised to stitch clearing level 33 by the upper edge of cam 16. The needles take yarn from one of a series of guides 32 as they are lowered by cam 17 and are lowered by cam 15 to draw new stitches and then raised to tuck level by cam 20. At station 12 the needles are raised by rocking pattern jacks 36 acting through jacks 37 when rocked outwardly by the engagement of presser cam 42 on portion 45 of the jack so that a lug 40 on each jack 36 engages a cam 41. Cam 42 is controlled from pattern drum 54 through one of a series of pattern levers 53. Cam surface 52 engages butts 55 on jacks 37 to lower them while the needles are acted on by cams 30, 27, 31. If only selected jacks 36 and hence needles 10 are to be raised by cam 41, butts on the remaining jacks are engaged by corresponding levers 57 to rock the jacks back so that they do not engage cam 41. Levers 57 are operated by a trick drum 60 which is advanced two-teeth of ratchet 59 for each rotation of needle cylinder 9. The needles are controlled similarly at station 11, a raising cam 70 raising those jacks rocked by presser cam 71 and not discarded by levers 75. A stocking, Fig. 7, has a turned welt 96, an after welt 97, a leg 98, a foot 99 a ring toe 100 and reciprocatorily knitted heel and toe portions 101, 102. As shown, Fig. 6, the jack butts in half A of the needle cylinder are in different groups of levels from those in half B butts in levels 106, 107 controlling the tuck stitch fabric while those in levels 108, 109 control the float stitch fabric. The fabric of Fig. 11 for the ring toe 100 is knitted at feed 11 only, two yarns being fed so that one forms tuck loops and the other forms floats. The knit and float stitch patterns, Fig. 8 (not shown), and Fig. 9, are knitted at both stations with two yarns fed from yarn fingers at respectively low and high positions. Retractable raising and lowering cams 86, 87 and 90, 91 respectively preceding stations 11, 12 are in their active positions when these stitches are knitted. Selected needles take both yarns and unselected needles take only the lower yarn. The needles for the tuck-stitch pattern of Fig. 10 are selected in the half A of the stocking by jacks having butts at levels 106, knitting taking place at feed 12 and the half B of the stocking being knitted plain whereas the patterning in half B of the stocking takes place at feed 11 the half A of the stocking being knitted plain.
