988, 396. Circular knitting machines. CAROLINA KNITTING MACHINE CORPORATION. Sept. 19, 1961 [Nov. 25, 1960), No. 33603/61. Heading D1C A hosiery knitting machine controls the size of the stitches by first drawing loops between sinkers, without knitting, to form constant length loops, partly withdrawing sinkers to slacken the loops and then further operating the needles to knit. In operation, every other needle 31 knits normally a selvedge course, a second course is knitted normally, transfer nibs 43 and then extended to form welt transfer loops during the third course and normal knitting continues for the welt with an adjustable stitch cam 33 as in Fig.9. Stitch control then starts. A pattern drum raises segments 34, 35 of the cam 33 so that the needles 31 are lowered sufficiently to draw by not to knit (Fig. 17) and simultaneously the pattern drum releases a latch 63 (Fig. 21) so that the needles carry round a sinker cap 17 so that the sinkers 32 are fully inserted and the yarn 12 is laid across the top surfaces 46 (Figs. 4, 8, 14). As rotation continues the cap 17 partly withdraws the sinkers to slacken the loops, the cam segment 42 knits the loops and knitting continues. At the heel portion the cam segments 34, 35 are lowered for normal knitting and the first reversal of rotation causes the needles to carry round the sinker cap 17 to be engaged by the latch 63 so that normal knitting is resumed for the reciprocatory knitted heel portion. The pattern drum then resumes special knitting for the foot portion and then normal knitting for the toe portion.
