A verge assembly is provided in the lower end of the upper cylinder of a superposed cylinder machine and comprises a dial 45 containing bits 63 adapted to be actuated in sequence with the needles to enable terry loops to be drawn over their ends. Sufficient terry bits 63 may be provided to enable terrying to occur in the heel and sole portions of a sock whilst non- terrying bits 64 are provided over the remainder of the needle circle. The result is that the terry yarn slips off the ends of the bits 64 to be knitted in normal plating relationship with the ground yarn during production of terry fabric with the terry bits 63 but that both bits 63, 64 are capable of functioning as knock-over bits of any loops drawn by the needles in the upper cylinder. The dial cam cap is provided with a cam groove having two bit advancing portions 73b with a bit retracting portion 73c coupling them. The cam cap can be placed with the portion 73c opposite the yarn guides so that the bits are operated in each direction of reciprocatory knitting to effect the formation of terry loops. Also, by displacing the cam cap the bits can be rendered inoperative in that they are withdrawn and advanced during needle draw so that the terry yarn passes beneath them and is knitted in plating relationship with the ground yarn without forming terry loops.
