Abstract

929,754. Knitting-machines. FOISTER, CLAY & WARD Ltd. June 26, 1961 [April 6, 1960], No. 12186/60.. Class 74 (2). A circular knitting-machine has a sinker bed or dial with abnormally wide tricks to receive either thick sinkers or a plurality of thin sinkers so that unusually rounded sinker loops are formed, an auxiliary feed point F<SP>1</SP> at which elastic yarn is fed to selected needles 9<SP>1</SP> and at the main feed point F means which move the sinkers 14 inwards earlier than normally to draw loops over the tops of the sinkers and also means which lower the needles 9 more than normally to form elongated stitches with the elastic yarn locked in the stitches formed by the selected needles. As shown, at main feed point F, feeder 1, forward and reverse stitch cams 2, 3 and guard cams 5, 6 and 7 are provided. Needles 9<SP>1</SP> have longer jacks than the remaining needles 9<SP>11</SP> so that engagement of the jack butts by cams 12, 13 raises needles 9<SP>1</SP> sufficiently to receive elastic yarn from feeder 8 in the open latches without knitting it after which the needles are lowered by cam 19. All needles 9 are lowered by cam 24 preparatory to the selection of needles 9<SP>1</SP>. The sinker cam ring has a cam track 15 in which the sinkers 14 run, being normally moved inwards by cam portion 16, a pivotable cam 17 effecting abnormal earlier inward movement of the sinkers at feeder F. At auxiliary feed point F<SP>1</SP> a further movable cam 18 is biased into operative position. A bolt cam 20 below stitch cam 2 at the main feed increases the length of stitches drawn. Timing mechanism or a control drum controls feeder 8 and cams 17, 18, 19, 20 and 24. In a modification, every other needle 9<SP>111</SP> has no jack while 'the remaining needles 9<SP>1</SP>, 911 have alternately long and short jacks. Thus normally only every fourth needle 9<SP>1</SP> takes the elastic yarn but if feeder 8 is lowered every other needle 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP> will take the yarn. One or more lengths of elastic yarn may be run on to the needles before knitting commences so as to be incorporated in the first course of the welt. The 1 x 1 or 1 x 3 incorporation of elastic yarn produces a mock rib fabric for sock tops, or cuffs or waists of other garments.
