Abstract

882,825. Knitting-machines. BILLI, G. April 8, 1958 [April 9, 1957], No. 11013/58. Class 74 (2). A rotating cylinder machine embodying a main cam drum which revolves once during the formation of a stocking, has at feeds A 1 -A 4 , stationary stitch cams 31-34 with which co-operate either movable clearing cams 35-37 or cams arranged in groups 39, 40, separated by said clearing cams and slidable radially of the needle cylinder to act on the butts of the needle jacks to selectively clear the needles or permit them to fail to clear for tuckstitch formation, a splicing yarn guide being provided at a feed associated with a movable clearing cam and being inserted and withdrawn before and after the introduction and withdrawal of that clearing cam, and a sinker cam track being provided having a radial deviation corresponding to each feed position, so that, when the cam groups 39, 40 are selecting for tuckstitch formation (cam 35 being then inactive) four courses, alternately of plain stitches and of plain and tuck stitches, are formed per revolution of the needle cylinder. In the formation of socks, a yarn guide 43, Fig. 3, first feeds an elastic yarn 44, a cam 41 being inserted to lower all needles for a subsequent 1 x selection by a cam 46, the elastic yarn being taken by the selected needles, without clearing. A cam 42, also then inserted, lowers the needles which have taken the elastic yarn and a cam 45 raises them to clear before they knit under cam 31. If feed A 2 is active, alternate courses of elastic and inelastic yarn are formed. For formation of after-welt and leg, cams 36, 37, 39 and 40 are all active and the machine knits four-feed. To start the welt of a normal stocking, cams 40, Fig. 6, are arranged to raise alternate needles, cam 49 is inserted to lower the needles not so raised and cam 35 is active to ensure that the raised needles clear and take yarn at A 1 . For welt formation, cams 35, 36, 37 are all raised, cams 39 inserted to raise all needles and cams 40 arranged to raise alternate needles; thus, plain stitches are formed at all the feeds. At the end of welt formation, cam 47 is inserted to lower the needles not raised by cams 40, so permitting the insertion of welt hooks. For formation of after-welt and leg, the cams are arranged as for welt formation. To form tuck stitches, the cam banks 39, 40 are active. On the needle cylinder covers are provided two clamping and severing devices 56, 57 and 60, 61, associated with springs 55, 59 and each acting on the yarns of two adjacent feeds. A cam introduces and withdraws an additional heel splicing yarn guide. A withdrawn splicing yarn is cut by an electricallyheated element 312 whilst it is between the lips of a suction orifice 306a which thereafter holds the end of the yarn until it is reintroduced.
