Abstract
860,930. Knitting-machines. BILLI, G. April 26, 1957 [April 27, 1956; April 11, 1957], No. 13325/57. Glass 74 (2). A circular machine has a normal feed K at which the needles take yarn and knit during both rotary and reciprocatory knitting, a second feed H1 having adjacent thereto a stitch cam 150 following a clearing cam 151, and slide cams 22A-22F situated after the second feed and before the normal feed with respect to the direction of movement of the needle cylinder during rotary knitting, a one and one selection of the needles for the beginning of the welt being effected by the slide cams and needle selection for tucking being effected by cyclically inserting and withdrawing the slide cams, at least one of which at any particular moment is withdrawn from operation, so that a course of plain stitches and tuck loops can be formed with the yarn of the normal feed while the yarn of the second feed forms a course of stitches knitted on all needles by operation of said stitch cam. The cams 22A- 22F are inserted, in accordance with pattern requirements, by disc cams 8A-8F keyed to a shaft 5 driven from the needle cylinder. The cams 8 act on the cams 22 through rockers 14A-14F which are also subject to the overriding control of two sliders controlled by the main cams of the machine and having heads 116a, 116b, each associated with half the cams 8A-8F. One half-circumference of the needle cylinder has short-butted needles 101 and the other half-circumference has long-butted needles 102. The needles 101, 102 have associated therewith repeated groups of four jacks 206- 209 and 210-213 respectively, these jacks bearing butts at six levels corresponding to the cams 8A-8F. Each jack has a butt corresponding to each of cams 8A and 8F and a third butt corresponding to a predetermined one of butts 8B-8E. The cams 8A-8F are operative (Fig. 16) to effect tuck stitch selection, the machine then knitting two-feed. One needle in each group of four is then, at each revolution, associated with a withdrawn cam 22 and so not cleared before taking the yarn at K. At the beginning and end of the welt, a one and one selection of the needles is effected by insertion of cams 22A, 22B, 22C, through the action of head 116A, further action by cams 84 and 86 lowering the alternate needles to miss yarn at feed K and to allow advance of welt hooks. During formation of the body of the welt, when feed H1 is effective, cam 84 is withdrawn to nullify the one and one selection. Heel and toe are knitted single feed. The feed for formation of the foot bottom is effected at H1. At the beginning and end of a period of activity of the feed at H1, the yarn is bound into the fabric over a few needles by reason of late insertion and early withdrawal of the clearing cam 151. The jack butts at the level of cam 8F are short under the short butt needles and of different lengths in each of the groups of four jacks under the long butt needles. The butts at the level 8A are alternately long and short in the region of the short butt needles and, in the region of the long butt needles, are of three different lengths; but an anomalous jack 209S has a long butt and always forms a plain stitch, to avoid the presence of two adjacent tuck stitches. The intermediate jack butts are long where the needle butts are short and vice versa. The second sinker withdrawing profile is provided by a member 36, which is slidable circumferentially of the cam drum 28, and a block 37, one end of which is pivoted at 38 to a circumferentially movable slider 39 and the other end of which is movable around the pin 38 to provide radial adjustment. Interchangeable yarn guides, in the zone where the tuck stitches are formed, yarn pick-ups 59, 59, clamps 56, 60 and shears 57, 61 are provided.
