Abstract
479,324. Knitting machines. HEMPHILL CO. May 27, 1937, No. 14717. Convention date, June 23, 1936. [Class 74 (ii)] A cylinder-and-dial machine for knitting plain and rib fabric having the same number of wales is provided with means for moving the dial angularly with respect to the cylinder so that in transferring from rib to plain work, the loops last knitted on the dial needles are transferred to cylinder needles laterally spaced from the dial needles upon which the loops are originally knitted. The shogging of the dial may be equal to the distance between two adjacent dial needles, or double that distance. The dial is driven by a gear 23, a lug 20 being engaged during rib knitting by the notch 24 of a pattern-controlled lever 21, and when changing from rib to plain knitting by the end of a stop screw 31. The stop screw 31 and the lever 21 rotate with the gear 23. Adjustment of the screw 31 effects variation in the amplitude of the shogging of the dial. The lever 21 is urged to the normal position, shown in Fig. 9, by a spring 25, and is moved away so that the lug 20 can engage the screw 31 by a lever 27 operated by a cam and connecting link 225. Upon movement of the lever 27, a brake member 34 engages a disc 17 carrying the lug 20 to overcome the momentum of the needle dial to effect a quick shogging of the dial. To effect the transfer from rib to plain. knitting, the dial needles may be retracted so that one or more, preferably two courses are knitted by the cylinder needles intermediate of the dial needles, and the dial knitting cam 36 and transfer cam 35 are raised out of the path of the butts of the needles. The transfer cam 35 has a right-angled portion 38 extending upwardly, and the cam 36 has a similar upwardly extending part. These parts are provided with projecting screws and are actuated by cam slots 42 in links 40 movable under pattern control. The dial may be disposed eccentrically of the cylinder, so that the dial needles are retarded and gain with respect to the cylinder needles during each revolution of the machine. As shown in Fig. 28a, a dial needle 217 is shogged over two cylinder needles, so that its loop 216 can be taken by the cylinder needle 215. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 33a, a dial needle has been shogged over four cylinder needles so that its loop 221 is taken by the cylinder needle 220. A shoulder 223 on the dial needle 222 serves to spread the loop 221 laterally as well as forcing it forwardly to a position over the cylinder needle 220 brought into operation. In knitting a sock, Fig. 52, and after the loopers' rounds have been formed, anti-ravel courses A are knitted upon the cylinder needles in operative during rib knitting, followed a pull course P, alternate cylinder needles dropping their stitches while the intermediate needles knit one course. Two rib courses R are knitted and then a welt W is formed by knitting upon the intermediate cylinder needles while the dial needles hold their stitches. The rib top RT extends down to the transfer T. To relieve stress in the loops during the shogging of the dial, a relatively loose course is knitted on the cylinder needles.
