Abstract

391,738. Knitting-machines. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc., 366, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Swinglehurst, H. ; Orange, New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 16, 1933, No. 1432. Convention date, Jan. 6, 1932. [Class 74 (ii).] Fabrics with variations in stitch structure such as eyelet holes are produced bv the transfer of sinker waleloops by means of single or doublebend transfer jacks 28. In lateral contact with the transfer jacks there are sinkers with or without nebs above their loop-drawing edges 62,62<1>. By locating the nose 30 of each transfer jack above a nebless sinker 26 and the lower edges 30<1> below the tops of the sinker nebs 61 and adapting them to measure the loops over the nebless sinkers it is possible to knit thereby a fine-gauge fabric. The invention is described as applied to a 16-feeder machine with stationary needle-cylinder. The needles are controlled by cams, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the jacks by cams, pattern wheels and fixed surfaces 38 .. 46. The cams 38, 40, 45 are controlled by a shift ring 48. When the ring 48 is pushed to its extreme position in the direction of knitting, i.e. to the right in Fig. 3, the swivel cam 38 is withdrawn from the path of the transfer jack butts while the cams 40, 45 are inserted into it. If the transfer cam 46 at the left hand of the section has not been withdrawn from operative position all the jacks will be in transfer position at the point A and the needles clearing at B will come up beside the jacks but by the time the elements have reached yarn-feeding point C the jacks will have been retracted. Plain stitches are drawn at D and at G the needles receive yarn for the second course of stitches drawn at J. The jacks are not moved out at point J since cam 38 is withdrawn, but as they pass pattern wheel 39 at point L any jacks which may be selected by teeth thereon will be taken back at N before yarn can be laid over them. At point Q those jacks passing the second pattern wheel 44 and selected thereby will move radially outward. Needles clear at R but selected jacks are withdrawn at point S by cam 45 before yarns can be laid over them. When it is required to make fabric with simultaneous transfer of two sinker wale loops on each jack the ring 48 is moved to the left, advancing the cam 38 into the track of the jack butts and retiring the cams 40, 45. If it is required to make eyelet holes on certain jacks only the ring 48 is moved to a mid-position to bring cams 38, 40, 45 into a neutral position so as not to interfere with jacks that are at either the out-of-action or the loop-laying position. Specifications 5993/07 and 5995/07, [both in Class 74, Lace-making &c.], are referred to.
