[Class 74 (ii).] For selecting sinkers or web holders and/or needles for patterning, e.g. by reverse plating, drop-stitch effects or design in pile loop fabric, a pattern wheel is used comprising a dial 12 in which are mounted slidable two-part jacks 6. The two parts 7, 8 are hinged together and the sinkerengaging ends of the outer parts 7 are turned over. The inner parts 8 have butts 11 on which operate cams mounted in a stationary cap 14 while the parts 7 have butts 10 sliding in radial tricks of a ring 16. The parts 8 rest upon pins 18 which pass through the inclined walls 13<11> and rest on the cams 20 of a pattern drum 21. This drum can be racked, say, one step per course knitted. The pins can thus be raised at any time to lift the parts 8 of the corresponding jacks so that their butts 11 are operated by the cam cap 14. After the jacks have been projected and their companion sinkers have been thereby moved to reverse plating position they are retracted and either fall by gravity to the inactive position or are pushed down by a cam. Alternatively the pins 18 may be divided into series each series being controlled by a rotating drum &c. having lugs &c. extending along it in an arc of a circle. The jacks 6 instead of acting on sinkers may act on independent instruments mounted below the sinkers, these instruments when acted on pushing the needles inwards to effect reversal of the plating. The jacks may act directly on the needles in which case they are mounted to slide radially in the sinker bed and have long projecting members 52 provided with lateral needle engaging projections 56. The outer ends have upper butts 54 and a line of depending butts 55 any of which may be removed. The butts 55 are first selected by the action of pattern controlled plungers and the movement is completed by cams acting on the butts 54.
