Abstract

7459. Bettney, H. A., and Hammersley, C. W. April 10. Circular knitting-machines.- Relates to machines in which double-ended needles can be transferred from one cylinder to the other to change the pattern of rib. The needles, as shown in Fig. 2, have two swells c, and the jacks, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, have butts i, varying in length according to the changes of rib required, projecting pins j, cut-away portions to fit over the ends and latches of the needles, and recesses to fit the swells c. The lower cam ring is driven by the gear teeth t, and the upper one through a lever v pivoted to a bracket Wand detachably connected to a bracket x on the lower cam ring ; the same bracket drives the sinker cam ring y, which is formed as usual, but with a longer operating part. The sinkers have two prongs, as shown in Fig. 5, and the loops are knocked over on the top and bottom of the upper and lower prongs respectively. The thread 9 is led through a hole in the spindle 2 to the carrier 6, Figs. 1 and 7, which is shaped to act as a latch guard and opener. To transfer certain needles from the frame to the machine cylinder, certain of a series of special cams are brought into action automatically through the pattern mechanism or by hand ; the effect of this is to bring all jacks with a certain length of butt to the position shown in Fig. 12 ; in making this motion, the pins j are raised by cams on the intermediate walls of the needle tricks, thus causing both sets of jacks to disengage from the swells c of the needles ; on further motion, other automatically-operated cams cause the frame needle jacks to push up the machine jacks and needles till the pins j drop off the cams and the machine jacks engage with the needles, when the ordinary cams come into work and the knitting proceeds as usual ; in the meantime, the special transferring- cams have been brought by the pattern mechanism to their normal position. The upper part q of the jacks act as latch guards, when an additional motion is given to the jacks by special cams, the pins j co-operating with grooves 32 in the walls of the tricks. Any ordinary reversing-gear, needlepicking devices for fashioning, tension apparatus, &c. may be fitted to the machine.
