Abstract

374,508. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, Rhode Island, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Lawson, R. H., Pawtucket, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) March 12, 1931, No. 7629 Convention date, March 20, 1930. [Class 74 (ii).] Jacks 19, one to each sinker 9, are provided for moving the sinkers of a knitting-machine for measuring, wholly or in part, the lengths of stitches formed by the needles. The jacks 19 are preferably arranged behind the needles 16 in the needle tricks, and have at their upper ends lugs 21 which engage within the throats 22 of the sinkers. Butts 27 on the jacks are engaged by cams 28, 29 mounted upon an additional cam ring which may be adjustable to align the jack and needle controlling cams, the incline 30 of the cam 28 raising a jack 19 when the corresponding needle 16 is being lowered by the stitch-drawing cam 31. Immediately after the jack has been raised so that the corresponding sinker assists in drawing the stitch, the cam 29 depresses the jack 19 so that cutting of the yarn by the sinker is prevented. The jacks 19 may be formed in two parts 24, 25 with interengaging ends. In another form, in which needle jacks 48 are arranged beneath the needles, the sinkeractuating jacks 110 extend behind the needles 45 and the needle jacks 48 and are actuated by cams 124, 125. In this form, the needles 45 are actuated for forming tapered reinforcements. or other designs by the jacks 48, the needle stitch cam being withdrawn. The jacks 48 are selectively operated in somewhat similar fashion to the needle jacks described in Specification 210,046, [Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.].
