Abstract

383,840. Knitting-machines. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc., 366, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Page, A. E.; Flatbush, Brooklyn, and Swinglehurst, H.; Floral Park, both in New York, U.S.A.) March 9, 1932, No. 7100. Convention date, March 13, 1931. [Class 74 (ii).] In circular machines having selectively operated striping yarn fingers, the length of wrap can be varied by means which select and hold outside the needle circle, after the selecting means have released the same, certain of the fingers chosen by the finger selecting means. The invention is embodied in a machine of the type shown in Specification 12722/13, [Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.], and including pivotally mounted pattern yarn fingers 766, which, with the usual bobbin stand 840, are rotated in unison with the needle cylinder. The selection of the yarn fingers is obtained by means of an intermittently rotated trick wheel 800, which by engagement with either or both of reader cams 825, 825<1> operates a lifting rod 754 and positions a cam 750 to engage any one of a plurality of butts at the upper end of each finger. The trick wheel 800 also carries means for selecting those needles which are to take wrapping yarns. When a yarn finger is swung radially outwards it carries the pattern yarn in front of a stationary abutment 870, which brings the yarn into contact with the selected needles, and then passes behind a maintaining cam 763 which holds it on the outside of the needle circle until the desired number of needles have been wrapped, both members 870, 763 being mounted on the latch ring 550. The length of wrap may be varied by employing yarn fingers of different lengths, the longer fingers, when selected, being engaged and held in yarn-feeding position by the maintaining cam 763 and the shorter fingers being returned within the needle circle by springs 815 as soon as they have passed beyond the selecting cam 750. To obtain greater selectivity, the maintaining cam may be stepped and the yarn fingers, which are enough to engage the cam, formed of varied lengths. Specifications 10819/15, 196,124, 224,593, 282,640, [all in Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.], also are referred to.
